Your daily habits significantly impact your health. From the way you sit at your desk to how you unwind in the evening, these repeated actions shape how your body feels and functions. But one habit we often overlook is something so simple, we do it without thinking — walking.
Often, without realising it, we develop small habits in the way we walk that can put unnecessary strain on our bodies. Over time, poor walking posture can contribute to nagging aches and pains in your back, hips, neck, and joints. The good news? By paying attention to how you walk, you can reduce discomfort, feel more energised, and even lift your mood.
Did you know that walking well is one of the easiest ways to improve your wellbeing? It doesn’t require fancy equipment or a gym membership — just some simple awareness and a few small adjustments.
If you’re already experiencing aches and pains, you may benefit from a professional osteopathy assessment to check your posture and gait.
Here’s Dr John Griffiths’ 10 step guide to walking well, and getting the most out of every step:
1. Stay Straight
Imagine a string attached to the back of your head, gently suspending you from above. This image helps you align your spine, lengthen your neck, and stand tall without stiffening up.
2. Keep Your Chest Up and Out
Picture another string pulling the bottom of your breastbone forward and slightly upward at a 45-degree angle. This opens up your chest, encourages deeper breathing, and helps prevent you from slouching.
3. Look Up, Not Down
It’s tempting to stare at your feet, especially if you’re deep in thought, but this can strain your neck and shoulders. Instead, keep your gaze 10–20 feet ahead of you. This naturally aligns your neck and helps you walk with more confidence.
4. Engage Your Core
Your core muscles support your spine and protect your back. As you walk, gently draw your belly button up and back toward your spine. This small action helps you maintain good posture and reduces the risk of lower back pain.
5. Relax Your Shoulders
Check in with your shoulders. Are they creeping up towards your ears? Let them drop down and hang naturally. Avoid forcing them back or tensing up — instead, allow your arms to rest at your sides with palms naturally facing forward.
6. Gentle Arm Swings
Your arms help propel you forward. Let them swing naturally back and forth with a slight bend at the elbows. A relaxed, rhythmic arm swing can make your steps feel lighter and helps your hips and knees move more freely.
7. Relax Your Hips
Your hips are designed to swivel as you walk. Let your pelvis move naturally instead of keeping it rigid. A fun way to practise this is by doing a gentle “twist” motion at home — this helps you feel how your hips should move as you stride.
8. Soft Knees
Avoid locking your knees straight. Keep a slight bend in your knees so they act as shock absorbers with every step. This reduces the impact on your joints and helps you walk more smoothly.
9. Heel-to-Toe Roll
A good walking step rolls smoothly from heel to toe. Land lightly on your heel, roll through the arch of your foot, and push off with your toes. This motion distributes pressure evenly and helps prevent foot and ankle pain.
10. Even Steps
Aim for a consistent, comfortable stride. If you notice you’re favouring one leg or limping slightly, shorten your stride until both legs feel like they’re moving evenly. Use your hips to help extend each step evenly without over-striding.
Why does it matter?
Proper walking posture can:
- Reduce strain on your back, neck, and joints.
- Improve circulation and breathing.
- Increase your overall energy and endurance.
- Even boost your mood!
