Cycling 230 Miles for a Lifesaving Cause: Brian’s Charity Challenge

5 Sep 2025

Hard work at 20… a real challenge in your 60s!

How would you feel at the thought of riding a hundred miles on a bicycle? Would it seem like hard work? How about 230 miles…? Yes, two hundred and thirty miles.

That’s what Brian Hughes is doing this Sunday, and all in aid of charity! He is raising money for Wales Air Ambulance and has already raised over £1200.

Brian says

“On Sunday 7th September I will be cycling from Cardiff to Llanelli to support Wales Air Ambulance Charity. At the completion of this ride, I am going to leave Llanelli and continue for a further approximately 160 miles through the night to my home in Conwy North Wales and stopping at the Wales Air Ambulance base in Caernarfon to meet the crew who saved my life. I aim to complete the whole challenge within a 24-hour timeframe.

I had a heart attack on Friday 21st March this year whilst out cycling 100 miles on my local roads near Beddgelert where I had no mobile signal or internet. I walked to the nearest property and used their landline to contact emergency services who dispatched an ambulance which arrived 1hr and 10 minutes later and performed an ECG on me and informed me that I was having a heart attack. This information was sent to Glan Clwyd hospital who immediately dispatched an air ambulance. They promptly arrived and loaded me on for a ride to Glan Clwyd where a specialist team were awaiting, and they performed an Angiogram on me. This procedure undoubtedly saved my life, and I was then in a specialist ward for the next 4 days where they looked after me and also did a heart echo scan which showed no lasting damage to my heart. Upon my discharge I did everything as I was told to do and within a few weeks I joined an 8-week heart rehab programme, doing physical exercise whilst supervised and monitored and was finally discharged by them and was allowed to go back to my cycling as long as I followed their advice on certain heart rate parameters. I want to do this challenge in order to help raise money for this much needed service and it would be great to meet up with the helicopter crew who were there on that day.

Every year they need to raise £11.2m to keep the helicopters in the sky and rapid response vehicles on the road. The teams onboard, deliver advance critical care to patients across Wales 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Our Level 5 Sports Massage therapist, Dafydd Monks says “It is a pleasure to support Brian’s efforts to raise money for an invaluable charity for us here in North Wales. The Air Ambulance is a lifeline to many, and Brian is going above and beyond to raise money for this cause. His undertaking is not easy, it would be a serious undertaking in your 20s, but for someone in their 60s it is mind-blowing. If anyone can do this, it is Brian – his training, performance and commitment to this goal is second to none. I wish him every success and will meet him at the finish line to show my support and congratulate him on his achievement”.
