Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in North Wales

The Healing Power of Oxygen

Imagine breathing almost pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, sending a surge of healing energy throughout your body. That’s the magic of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a treatment gaining popularity for its potential to boost your health and well-being.

What is HBOT?

HBOT involves breathing concentrated oxygen (96-98%) in a pressurised chamber. This increased pressure allows your blood to dissolve and carry more oxygen throughout your body. This surge of oxygen can accelerate healing, improve cellular function, and reduce inflammation.

Benefits of HBOT at LEAF Health

LEAF Health utilises mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in our Llandudno and Anglesey clinics with sessions typically lasting 60 minutes at 1.4 atmospheres. Here are some of the potential benefits you might experience:

  • Faster Wound Healing: HBOT can significantly improve healing times for chronic wounds, diabetic ulcers, and surgical incisions.
  • Enhanced Sports Performance & Recovery: Athletes can benefit from increased oxygen delivery to muscles, leading to faster recovery times, reduced pain, and improved performance.
  • Improved Cognitive Function: Research suggests HBOT may improve memory, focus, and cognitive function in some individuals.
  • Reduced Inflammation & Pain: HBOT’s anti-inflammatory properties can help manage pain associated with various conditions like arthritis and migraines.
  • Increased Energy Levels & Improved Sleep: Many HBOT patients report experiencing increased energy levels and improved sleep quality.

Who can benefit from HBOT?

HBOT is a potential treatment option for a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Chronic wounds
  • Long COVID
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Skin grafts and flaps
  • Sports injuries
  • Crush injuries
  • Decompression sickness
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Sudden hearing loss
  • Brain injury (including concussion)
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Migraines

Please note: This list is not exhaustive. It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to determine if HBOT is right for you.

What to expect during an HBOT session at LEAF Health

  • A qualified HBOT Operator will guide you through the entire process.
  • You’ll comfortably relax wearing comfortable clothing in a spacious,  chamber.
  • You’ll breathe nearly pure oxygen through a mask while inside the chamber.
  • The pressure inside the chamber will gradually increase and decrease during the session.
  • Sessions typically last for 60 minutes.

Safety and Considerations

HBOT is generally considered safe with minimal side effects. However, it’s not suitable for everyone. Here are some things to consider:

  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions might make HBOT unsuitable. It’s important to disclose your complete medical history to your doctor before considering HBOT.
  • Claustrophobia: If you experience claustrophobia, consider seeing a hypnotherapist or other therapist to deal with this first.
  • Ear discomfort: Pressure changes during the session can cause mild ear discomfort, similar to airplane travel.

FAQs

Click on a question below to view its answer…

Can I use my phone or laptop in the chamber?
Yes.  The level of pressure in the chamber does not affect your electronic devices.
Is HBOT safe?
Yes. There are only a few conditions when a client would be recommended not to use HBOT.  There is a careful full assessment carried out before your first session plus before each session, the HBOT Operator checks on the current health of the client.  It is not recommended to have HBOT if you have a cold or flu or an ear infection.
How many treatments will I need?
As each person is different, it is difficult to give a definitive answer.  For certain conditions eg early/moderate dementia/Alzheimers and cancer, 5 sessions per week initially for a month is recommended.  For others, single sessions eg to help recover from sports training and events would be ideal.
Can I receive treatment if I am pregnant?
HBOT is generally seen to be safe for pregnancy.  However, there is some evidence that HBOT increases the growth of the baby so HBOT would not be appropriate for babies growing at the normal or ideal size and weight.
