Arran Waugh

LEAF Health Therapist

Arran loves what he does, and it shows. He has a degree specialising in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture. He has worked tirelessly in his pursuit to understand the human body-mind-spirit connection, how to optimise its natural healing abilities, and to master its potential both inside and outside the clinical setting.  He advocates a good diet and exercise regime that he believes starts with himself. Diet and health preservation are listed first in TCM priorities, and TCM is very focused on preventing illness but equipped to intervene if sickness occurs.

Arran is passionate about general health conditions and how these relate to daily living and activities. Arran has engaged in many sports over the years and continues to do so regularly.  He understands that staying healthy and active is paramount to his physical and mental wellbeing. He has a particular interest in sports acupuncture as he has personally experienced or sustained – alongside many of his clients –  some sport-related injury or overuse injury from manual labor. Of course, this increases when undergoing the natural ageing process or with some underlying disease process. To this end, he is interested in the many stages an athlete must go through to perform at the highest level to increase performance, which must utilise injury prevention and recovery strategies into their training regimes to succeed. Injury can ultimately make or break a career. Therefore proper knowledge and implementation of that knowledge is essential. The ultimate goal is to stay healthy, utilising therapies he has personally found effective in this pursuit. Arran wants his clients to continue to do what they love at some level that satisfies basic needs.

In addition, Arran studies the other branches of TCM, such as herbal medicine, and has studied qigong to help him become more rounded. He seeks to complement this with advances in western medicine but keeping grounded by TCM, remembering his roots. He has developed a particular interest in the modern concept of functional medicine that seeks to get to the crux of chronic disease and ask: “Why are you ill?”.  He believes it follows a similar mind-body-spirit approach to TCM but with a modern spin. It is easy to get these mixed up when compartmentalising body systems into specialist fields, sometimes overlooking the real issue.

Arran doesn’t like to say that western Doctors are not holistic practitioners as he believes this is a fallacy. However, he does accept that time and other factors that come into play can draw away from what’s happening if we are not careful as practitioners or physicians. To this end, he regularly studies western medicine, as his ongoing education at the pre-clinical level, and tries to keep up to date on the latest information. Arran hopes to deliver the best care he can provide to his clients within his scope of practice.
