Discover the Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

17 Jan 2024

Imagine breathing almost pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, sending a surge of healing power throughout your body. Sounds pretty incredible, right? That’s the magic of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a treatment gaining popularity in the UK for its potential to boost your health and well-being.

While inside a hyperbaric chamber, the extra oxygen and increased atmospheric pressure drives more oxygen to your red blood, but it also pushes oxygen into the blood plasma or liquid of the blood.  This dramatically increases the body’s oxygen absorption and oxygen-carrying capacity, flooding the body with oxygen.  This leads to accelerated cell repair and improves cellular function.

At LEAF Health, we use a soft chamber and Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT). Most appointments are a minimum of 60 minutes at 1.4 atmospheres (40 kPa) — the total appointment time is up to 90 minutes.

Research with mHBOT has shown that it has many health benefits, including increased energy levels, improved sleep, immune and cognitive function, reduced inflammation, stress and anxiety, and help with anti-aging. It has also been used to treat conditions such as traumatic brain injury, post-concussion syndrome, depression, and chronic fatigue syndrome. By delivering oxygen to the body at a higher pressure than normal, mHBOT can help to promote healing and improve overall well-being.

The protocols we use at LEAF Health have been shown to be helpful for:

But what exactly is HBOT, and how can it benefit you?

HBOT involves breathing 96-98% oxygen in a pressurised chamber, allowing more oxygen to dissolve in your blood and reach all areas of your body.

  1. Faster Wound Healing

Whether you’re recovering from surgery, a chronic wound, even a sports injury or a broken bone, HBOT can turbocharge your healing process. The extra oxygen fuels tissue repair and reduces inflammation, helping you get back to your best faster. It’s a great complement to our therapies and may be integrated with other care like foot health.

  2. Enhanced Sports Performance & Recovery

Athletes, rejoice! HBOT can be your secret weapon for pushing your limits. Increased oxygen uptake improves endurance, reduces fatigue, and speeds up recovery after intense training. Imagine smashing your personal bests while feeling energised and refreshed! Learn more about our support for active individuals through our Bangor clinic and Anglesey team.

  3. Fighting Stubborn Infections:

Some infections can be resistant to even the strongest antibiotics. But HBOT can come to the rescue! The high oxygen pressure helps flush out harmful bacteria and boost your immune system’s fighting power. Visit our Llandudno clinic to learn more about local therapy options.

  4. Brainpower Boost:

Feeling a bit foggy lately? HBOT might be the answer! Studies suggest it can improve brain function, neuroplasticity, memory, and focus by promoting new blood vessel growth and reducing inflammation in the brain. It may help with anxiety, brain trauma, concussion, strokes, migraines, dementia, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, autism, and ADHD.

We recommend speaking with one of our teams in Hitchin, Bangor, or Anglesey for personal guidance.

  5. Additional Health Benefits

It has many other health benefits, giving you more energy, slowing down atherosclerosis, stimulating the production of new stem cells and new brain cells.  The extra oxygen facilitates the body’s ability to produce both new tissue and new blood vessels.  It has been shown to help arthritis, some types of cancer treatment, diabetes, eczema, erectile dysfunction and fertility, fibromyalgia, MS, osteoporosis, overactive bladder, pulmonary fibrosis, and PTSD.

If you’re looking for a natural, non-invasive way to optimise your health and well-being, HBOT might just be the missing piece you’ve been searching for. See a full range of therapies across our clinics or check prices before booking.

What do you do?

When using our chamber, you simply take off your shoes, empty your pockets (no liquids or sharp object allowed), and lie down. You have a comfy foam chair to sit or lie on and a pillow to rest your head.  You may take your phone or iPad/tablet in there with you if you wish to use it during your session, or you can simply rest and sleep. Some people like to listen to music in the chamber, some like to do their work, or some like to rest and enjoy the peace.  After your time is up, we depressurise the chamber, you stand up and get out.

We also host events that explore health optimisation — a great way to learn more about therapies like HBOT.
