Stress
A background and possible solutions
Stress and its damaging effects is a subject that we hear about daily. But how many of us really understand exactly what stress is and more importantly do we know how to deal with the consequences. We all need a certain amount of stress in our lives otherwise we would be inert, immobile and very soon, dead! If we work within our own tolerance zone of stress we can be healthy, productive and satisfied with our lives. However, if our stress levels increase to a point where we are unable to cope, this can become harmful and over time will cause ill health.
When we perceive a threat of any kind, our bodies initiate a stress response which we call the “fight or flight” mechanism. Basically, hormones are released into the system, which helps us to run faster and/or fight harder. The increased efficiency of the body gives us an advantage if there really is a genuine threat to our survival. However, when we perceive an emotional threat, or if something unexpected happens in our lives, we still have the same instinctive reaction and more often than not, this physical response is inappropriate.
Stress can arise from worries about your personal situation, relationships and attitudes to life, or work can be the cause of your stress. Your working environment may be noisy and crowded, you have deadlines to meet, bosses and colleagues to please and all of these factors can activate the same stress response.
The adrenalin that we would normally use for physical activity remains within the body, causing us to feel anxious and irritable. This constant state of raised awareness makes it impossible to relax and wind down and over time this can lead to stress related illness.
Common negative effects of long term stress are:
high blood pressure, digestive disorders, diarrhoea and constipation, anxiety attacks, headaches, migraines, insomnia, depression, chronic fatigue, skin disorders, general muscle stiffness, respiratory problems, poor concentration.
If you are suffering from any of these or other conditions, regular De-stress treatments would help you release tension and stress and give you the opportunity to learn techniques of stress management. You can then face the world with confidence and positivity and your health will benefit.
