Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient scientific therapy that dates back as far as Egyptian times. It follows the same principles as acupuncture, using pressure points to stimulate the body to restore itself to full health. In reflexology however, the hands are used instead of needles to massage the foot reflexes to bring about this improvement.
Reflexology as an antidote to stress
Modern day living creates all kinds of physical and emotional stresses and strains. So many illnesses nowadays are stress related. It makes sense to find ways of coping with this draining condition. Tension in the mind creates tension in the body. Tight and tense muscles inhibit the release of body waste from the muscle fibres, causing numerous aches and pains. It also restricts the flow of blood and transportation of nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body resulting in the whole system becoming sluggish. Reflexology can play an important role in de-stressing the entire system because it induces deep relaxation and feelings of well-being. Because of this it can be highly effective in treating a large number of common health problems.
How does reflexology work?
There is a “map” of reflexes on the feet, which correspond to the organs and physical systems in the body, and so by massaging the feet all of the body is affected. Our ancestors used to walk barefoot on uneven ground massaging their feet naturally as they moved. We now spend much of our time sitting and when we walk we wear thick soled shoes or high heels over hard, flat surfaces and our feet become stiff and insensitive. Reflexology addresses this problem by “waking up” the feet again, getting the energy channels moving and creating an environment for health. During the session the reflexologist can detect imbalances in the system and then uses gentle pressure on the correct points to disperse any blockages., As the body relaxes, tension is released, all the organs and systems are stimulated, so the body is able to function far more effectively.
