Hopi Ear Candle Treatment
This is an ancient Indian relaxation ceremony for calming the mind, soothing the head and ears and relieving pressure in the sinuses. The ear candles induce a revitalising heat upon the head and ears, and are used to treat a variety of conditions. Although this therapy may have its origins in Ancient Greece, it was the Hopi Indians of North Arizona whose “medicine men” used this ceremony as part of their Shamanic rituals. This evidence has been gathered from rock paintings at various sites in North and South America. Through collaboration with western therapists Hopi ear candling is re-establishing its popularity as a non-invasive treatment with a variety of benefits.
How does it work?
A light suction action (chimney effect) is created when the candle is lit, and the movement of the flame creates air vibration within the candle, generating a massage-like effect on the ear-drum. This movement draws impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. It also has an effect of regulating and balancing ear pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. The locally applied warmth from the flame dilates blood vessels and increases lymph flow. This can be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of blocked nasal and aural passages.
Although it may seem an odd experience to have a lit candle in your ear, it really is very pleasant and soothing. Perhaps because hearing is temporarily dampened during treatment, the absence of outside stimulus induces a feeling of peaceful sedation, and the sound of the candle crackling and hissing gently in the ear can be quite hypnotic!
Most people find the whole experience very relaxing and many fall asleep during the treatment.
Afterwards you may find your hearing and sense of smell is enhanced.
