Human Givens Therapy

Helping People to Re-Discover what Nature Gave Us

What is Human Givens Therapy?

Strong emotions like depression, anxiety and anger are at the root of why so many people seek help from GPs, counsellors, psychotherapists or clinical psychologists.  Despite their training, many professionals are not good at dealing with the disruption that out of control emotions cause their clients.  Some common forms of counselling, for example, are known to make depression and anxiety disorders worse.  Conversely, the right type of counselling is known to be more effective than drug treatments for all of these conditions.  Human givens therapy is in the latter category of counselling.

What are the “Human Givens”?

We all have basic physical and emotional needs such as the need for attention, love, security, connection and control, and the self-esteem which arises from competence and being stretched in our lives.

To help us meet our needs, Nature also gave us valuable resources including imagination, memory, problem-solving abilities, self-awareness and a range of different thinking styles to use in various changing situations.  It is because these needs and resources are built into our biology that, together, they are known as Human “Givens”.

When our emotional needs are not met or our resources are used incorrectly, we suffer considerable distress.  And so can those around us.

Human Givens therapists focus on helping clients identify unmet emotional needs and empowering them to meet these needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways.  To do this they use a variety of proven techniques aimed at changing emotional responses and problem solving.

Why Human Givens Therapy?

This form of psychotherapy is effective because it draws upon findings from both psychology and neurobiology about what people need to function well.  It has recently been found that effective counselling always depends on how attuned the counsellor or therapist is to the givens of human nature.  All Human Givens practitioners are taught how to do this and before they become fully qualified, they are assessed for their effectiveness in helping people.

No “Psychobabble”

Human Givens practitioners focus on offering practical help which deals with mental and emotional distress in the here and now.  All practitioners have a sound body of knowledge and the skills to help distressed people with a wide variety of emotional and behavioural difficulties, enabling them to move on in their lives as quickly as possible.

Human Givens Therapy has been found to help with:

  •  Depression
  • Anxiety & Stress
  • Panic Attacks
  • Anger Problems
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Phobias
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Relationship Problems
  • Addiction
  • Obsessions
  • Poor Concentration
  • Self-Harming
  •  Poor Sleep
  •  Medical Conditions eg Psoriasis, Asthma, IBS, chronic pain

Human Givens practitioners can help with acute, (immediate) distressing psychological states as well as chronic ones.  They can also teach a client how to relax deeply and to feel empowered.  They aim to treat a client in as few sessions as possible and they may ask a client to practice some techniques in between sessions.

Euwan Hodgson (N Wales):  Grandson had session with Human Givens Therapy.  Can’t thank you enough. We’ve got our lovely grandson back!
